Children (Milk Tooth) Stem Cells

Deciduous teeth, otherwise known as baby teeth, temporary teeth and primary teeth, are the first set of teeth in the growth development of humans. Milk teeth start appearing at 6 months of age, the milk teeth are shed from 6 years onwards till about 10 years of age. Between the ages of 6 - 12 years the child has some milk teeth as well as some permanent teeth.

For children over the age of 12 years and for Teens the opportunity to bank dental stem cells arises specially when they are undergoing any orthodontic procedures where healthy teeth are removed to apply braces, etc. Premolar teeth and any other permanent teeth removed for these purposes too are rich sources of stem cells.

Why Milk teeth for Stem cells?

Research has shown that milk teeth are a rich source of stem cells.

Stem cells extracted from milk teeth contain mesenchymal stem cells, which multiply rapidly and differentiate into many different cell types and could be used for generating a wide range of cellular tissues. They can now be a potential source of repair kits for future.

Chondrocytes with ability to generate cartilage, important in the treatment of arthritis and joint injuries;

Osteoblast with ability to generate bone

Adipocytes these have the ability to repair damaged cardiac tissue e.g. after a heart attack.

Plus with capacity to generate neural cells, skeletal cells amongst others.

Milk Teeth highlighted in blue are collected for dental stem cell extraction

What is the right age to collect milk teeth for stem cells?

Dental stem cells are extracted from milk teeth of children of age group 6 – 12 years. This is the ideal age as the quality of the stem cells starts to decrease with the increase in the age. The stem cells are most vital during this period.

The right time to recover baby tooth with stem cells is before the teeth become very loose, as the cells in the dental pulp will remain more viable if they continue to have a blood supply.

Instead of putting it under a pillow and discarding them, they can now be a potential source of repair kits for future.

Be a tooth fairy and gift your child good health in future.

Adult (Wisdom Tooth) Stem Cells

Any of the four third molars are known as wisdom teeth. They usually appear between the ages of 17 and 25.

Wisdom teeth

Why wisdom teeth for stem cells?

Wisdom tooth too is a rich source of mesenchymal stem cells. Cells with potential to replicate and differentiate into various other cells types such as – neural, bone, skeletal muscle  and others.

What is the right age to collect wisdom teeth to extract stem cells?

In case of wisdom tooth, the rule is the sooner, the better.  As age progresses, it has been observed that there is a loss of viable stem cells in tooth, hence to avoid that it is better to get your wisdom tooth extracted sooner and stored.  Viable stem cells have been found in healthy wisdom teeth of individuals aged 30 or more.

When are wisdom teeth collected for stem cell extraction?

Only healthy wisdom teeth are collected for preservation. We recommend collection of wisdom teeth when they are extracted for either when they have already become impacted, or the wisdom teeth could potentially become problematic if not removed. Often they are also taken out for orthodontic procedures.

If your Dentist has recommended removal of wisdom teeth call us on our TOLL FREE number 1800 102 7836

STEM CELL BANKING PROCESS VIDEO

image

Step 1: Enrolment

Enroll in Stemade’s dental stem cell bank either by contacting us on the Toll Free Number 1800-102-7836 (STEM) or you can create your profile online in the Enrolment section on the website. You can also write to us at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .

During enrolment, after paying the necessary fees, you will have to sign a contract authorising Stemade to maintain and preserve the dental pulp and ensure its timely retrieval whenever required.

From the list of Stemade Smile Clinics (the list is accessible on the website in the Stemade Smile Clinics section) you can choose the nearest dentist for the tooth collection procedure, as per your convenience.

Step 2: Tooth Collection

Each Stemade Smile Clinic will have a Dental Sampling Kit, containing the necessary components, which will ensure the tooth is stored safely, at a particular temperature, until it reaches the lab.

On the day of collection, the dentist in the Stemade Smile Clinic will perform the procedure.

  • The collected tooth will be placed in the dental sampling kit with your details on it.
  • The paramedic will collect the blood sample and place it in the dental sampling kit.
  • This dental sampling kit is then carefully packed by the paramedic and will ensure its courier to the laboratory in Chennai.
  • The dental sampling kit will then be transported to the lab.

Step 3: Isolation

  • The tooth will be transported to the state-of-art laboratory at Chennai.
  • The dental pulp, containing the stem cells would be isolated by breaking open the tooth and the stem cells would be extracted.
  • The stem cells would be tested for sterility and quality control (assessment of the viability of the stem cells).

Step 4: Cryopreservation

  • If the stem cells pass the viability assessment, they will be stored cryogenically.
  • The cryogenic treatment is a process in which the stem cells are preserved by gradual cooling.
  • The dental stem cells are frozen by keeping the levy at a temperature of -150 ° C (-238 F) in liquid nitrogen.
  • The dental stem cells will be frozen and stored, with appropriate labeling of your relevant details, using cryopreservation technology to maintain their viability, on retrieval in future.

Step 5: Receipt of sample certificate and future retrieval of dental Stem Cells

After the sample is cryopreserved, the certificate of banking will be sent to you, which you must keep safely for future records.

For Further information about the process please call us at our TOLL FREE NUMBER 1800-102-7836 or write to us at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .

  • Clinical applications of human Mesenchymal Stem Cells are evolving rapidly with the aim to improve hematopoietic engraftment, expanding HSC, preventing graft-versus-host disease (GVHD), correcting inborn metabolic errors and delivering a variety of therapeutic genes into the cells.

Applications of mesenchymal stem cells in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine

Mesenchymal stem cells have been used to regenerate marrow microenvironment after myeloablative therapy.

The use of natural and synthetic biomaterials as carriers for mesenchymal stem cells delivery has shown increasing promise for orthopedic therapeutic applications, especially bone formation. Mesenchymal stem cells are ideal for treating arthritis and connective tissue ailments. When introduced into the infarcted heart, mesenchymal stem cells prevent deleterious remodeling and improve recovery. Number of reports have also indicated that these cells possess the capacity to trans-differentiate into epithelial cells and lineages derived from the neuro-ectoderm, and in addition, mesenchymal stem cells can migrate to the sites of injury, inflammation and to tumors. These properties of mesenchymal stem cells make them promising candidates for use in regenerative medicine and may also serve as efficient delivery vehicles in site-specific therapy.

Future Research on Mesenchymal Stem Cells

According to American Diabetes Association, mesenchymal stem cells can be the key to healing diabetic foot ulcers: Diabetic foot ulcers are the primary cause of hospital admissions for diabetics. Foot ulcers that heal improperly are at risk for infection, which can lead to amputation

FAQs

Here are answers to some of your FAQs on stem cells, dental stem cells, dental stem cell banking and more. In case you need more details and have any specific queries, feel free to ask our stem cell expert.

For quick answers to your queries call us at our TOLL FREE number 1800-102-7836

Stem cells are "master cells" in the body that have the potential to differentiate into different cell types e.g. blood cells, nerve cells and others. In addition to differentiation, they also serve as an internal repair system of the body. They are first seen during early embryonic development and are also distributed in different parts of the body in an adult.

ad1

Researchers have discovered several sources of stem cells:

Embryonic stem cells - These stem cells come from embryos that are four to five days old.

Adult Stem Cells - Adult stem cells are found in developed organs and tissues of the body. Despite the name, they are found in children as well as adults. These stem cells are found in small numbers in most adult tissues, such as bone marrow. Adult stem cells are also found in children and in placentas and umbilical cords.

Induced Pluripotent Stem Cells - These are regular adult cells that are not stem cells but are induced (re-programmed) to exhibit pluripotent properties, to act like embryonic stem cells.

ad2

Dental stem cells or Dental Pulp Stem Cells (DPSCs) are adult stem cells found in both, baby teeth (milk teeth of children in the age group of 6 -12 years.) and wisdom teeth in young adults. Studies have show that DPSCs have the ability to develop into more types of body tissue than other types of stem cells. These cells contain mesenchymal cells, which have been shown to differentiate into bone, neural tissue, dental tissue, cartilage and muscle.

ad3

Doctors are extremely enthusiastic about stem cell therapy, also known as regenerative medicine. It is replacement of diseased, dysfunctional or injured cells with stem cells or their derivatives. It's somewhat similar to the organ transplant process but uses cells instead of organs.

Researchers grow stem cells in the lab. These stem cells are manipulated to make them specialize into specific types of cells, such as heart muscle cells, blood cells or nerve cells. The specialized cells could then be implanted into a person. For example, if the person had heart disease, the cells could be injected into the heart muscle. The healthy, transplanted heart cells could then contribute to repairing defective heart muscle.

At present, extensive research is being conducted by various brilliant scientists all over the world, with a wide array of diseases being studied ranging from cancer to heart diseases to regeneration of dental and craniofacial cells. Given the ability of these cells to produce and secrete neurotrophic factors, these stem cells may also be beneficial for the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases and the repair of motoneurons following injury.

Currently dental pulp stem cells are being studied for their future potential in:

  • To generate new bone structure for fractures, improper bone formations, weak bones etc.
  • To generate cartilages for conditions like arthritis, etc.
  • Repairing damaged heart cells after a heart attack.
  • To generate cells of nerves and the brain.
  • To repair muscles for diseases such as muscle weakness.
  • Regenerating liver cells

There are many reasons.

  • Some treat the service as a sort of biological insurance.
  • Others have chosen to store stem cells because their family has specific history or risk factors that prompt them to consider all potential options available.
  • Some see the field of stem cells growing rapidly and do not want to miss the opportunity to keep the cells now.
  • Most agree, that there are limited opportunities to safely, inexpensively, and painlessly acquire and save these valuable stem cells in case they are ever needed.

There are two types of stem cell transplants - Allogeneic and Autologous

  • Allogeneic stem cell transplant uses donor cells from a public cell bank.
  • Autologous stem cell transplant uses the patient's own stem cells.   There are many advantages of autologous transplant including; no immune reaction and tissue rejection of the cells, no immunosuppressive therapy needed, and significantly reduced risk of communicable diseases.

Dental stem cells are used for autologous transplants. However they may potentially be used to treat conditions in first or second degree blood relatives (siblings, parents, grandparents, uncles, and aunts) in addition to the donor.

Yes, the organs or tissues which are derived from your stem cells will be normal and similar to your other tissues, because they have grown from your cells only

ad4

On the surface, stem cells might seem irrelevant to you because you do not have any degenerative disorders. However stem cells offer the hope of a cure for many types of disease, such as insulin-dependant diabetes, MI, MS, Parkinsons disease and tissue damage such as that suffered by spinal trauma victims. Stem cells could be important to any disease due to their unique property of being forever 'young' and being responsive to change.

Dental stem cell banking complements Umbilical cord stem cell banking. Cord blood stem cells are mainly used today to treat blood diseases; however, dental stem cells will be used to treat hard and soft tissue diseases and injuries, such as healing connective tissue, repairing dental tissues, neuronal tissue and bone.

DPSCs score high not only in terms of therapeutic advantages but also in terms of practical aspects of banking

Dental pulp stem cell banking has the following advantages which are one of its kinds:

  • The time period for banking healthy dental stem cells is wide, since it can be done for children in the age group of 5-12 years and also for adults whose wisdom tooth is to be extracted.
  • The collection of stem cells from the pulp of the tooth is easy, painless, quick, highly efficient, with no ethical complications, as it involves a simple process of extraction of the tooth.
  • Dental stem cells are non-controversial adult stem cells, unlike embryonic stem cells, the source of which involves ethical issues.
  • The dental stem cells have demonstrated interactivity with biomaterials, making them ideal for tissue reconstruction.
  • DPSCs are expandable, they can be multiplied under controlled conditions.

The sooner the better!” As the quality of the stem cells starts to decrease with the increase in the age. However in children it is 6-12 years and in the wisdom teeth cases they can be removed and preserved soon after the eruption of the tooth in the mouth.

ad4

The baby teeth (incisors and canines) and wisdom teeth are the right teeth to collect as they are rich in adult stem cells. Except in cases of accident or trauma, the teeth are extracted to allow proper positioning. The dental pulp in baby teeth or wisdom tooth is rich in adult stem cells. The eruption of wisdom teeth is generally between 17 and 21 years. Generally, tooth eruption is earlier in girls than in boys. The teeth usually erupt in pairs, one on each side.

ad1

The right time to recover baby tooth with stem cells is before the teeth become very loose, as the cells in the dental pulp will remain more viable if they continue to have a blood supply.

ad1

Although it is not known for certain how many cells will be needed for clinical use in the future, we recommend you store as many as possible to ensure the most cells are available. For this reason, we do not charge extra for up to four teeth from the same patient when they are collected and shipped at the same time.

ad2

Diseases of different severity or tissue defects of different size will undoubtedly require different amounts of stem cells to heal. Conceptually, the more teeth are banked, the greater the potential for sufficient stem cells to treat various diseases.

ad3

No, such teeth are not useful for the banking purposes. The teeth has to be removed using a standard procedure and taken immediately to the lab for testing and storage within 48 hours of removal.

ad4

Yes. Unless the children are identical twins, their cells will not be a perfect immunological match.

ad1

No, we can use only the wisdom teeth. No other permanent teeth can be used for the stem cell banking.

ad2

In case of wisdom tooth, the rule is the sooner, the better. As age progresses, it has been observed that there is a loss of viable stem cells in tooth, hence to avoid that it is better to get your wisdom tooth extracted sooner and stored

Once confirmed by our panel dentist, you will be scheduled for tooth collection at one of our Stemade Smile Clinic. Each SSC is equipped with all the necessary equipments and skilled staff for tooth collection. With minimum intervention the loosened tooth is extracted by the Dentist and blood sample is collected by the present paramedic and places in tooth sampling kit.

ad4

Tooth collection is a routine procedure performed by all dentists in their clinic. Hence, you can expect no to minimal pain during the procedure.

ad1

Most often, the tooth to be collected in a child is mobile. Hence, it may not require injecting a local anesthetic solution. Often even a topical application of a anesthetic gel / solution would suffice. However, this decision is solely the responsibility of the dentist.

ad2

Routinely in children, there are no complications reported after removing their teeth.

ad3

There is NO SCIENTIFIC TRUTH in any such statements. Milk teeth are genetically programmed to exfoliate / fall and are normally replaced by permanent teeth. We suggest that you should also take the advice of your local dentist on this matter.

ad4

The dentist in our Stemade Smile Clinic places your extracted tooth in a specially designed dental sampling kit and transport kit. The kit will protect your stem cells while they are transported to our state-of-art laboratory in Chennai. The pulp, containing the stem cells, will then be immediately extracted and evaluated for viable cells.

ad1

If viable cells are present, they will be cryogenically stored and supervised until needed. We will immediately contact you and provide you with a certificate of banking, which you should place with your family medical records for future use.

Your stem cells are being stored by highly trained professionals using State-of-the-art cryopreservation technology at our laboratory in Chennai maintaining the highest scientific standards. The lab has following accreditations - ISO Certification, AABB (American Association of Blood Banks) Accredited Stem Cell Bank, GMP and US FDA approved. Assure yourself that you will receive your stem cells whenever required.

ad2

Cryopreservation is the process of preserving cells or whole tissues by cooling them to sub-zero (-156 OC) temperatures. At these freezing temperatures, biological activity is stopped, as are any cellular processes that lead to cell death. Dental stem cells can be successfully stored long-term with cryopreservation and still remain viable for use. These cells can be cryopreserved for an extended period of time, and when needed, carefully thawed to maintain their viability.

ad3

If we find that the cells are not viable, then we will immediately refund you according to the refund scheme.

ad4

As long as you are our member, we will store your dental stem cells. In a nutshell, it can be stored for life.

ad1

All samples are bar-coded and tracked at all times during the entire process using a sophisticated sample management and logistics system. These systems have been tested, verified and are being used to collect hundreds of samples successfully.

ad2

Ownership of the child's tooth cells belongs to the parent or legal guardian until the child's 21st birthday. Then full ownership is passed to the child, by renewing the contract. If you do not renew the contract, we reserve the right to remove the cells from storage.

ad3

No. Banked stem cells are stored for the individual’s own use (autologous) and cannot be given to anyone else.

ad4

The technology used by Stemade has already been patented for all Pan Asian countries including India.

ad1

p>Do not worry; Stemade is a zero debt company. Stemade has exclusive non revocable license of patented technology from INSTITUT CLINIDENT, France for dental stem cell banking in Asia. It has been founded by Deepak Ghaisas and Shailesh Gadre.

Deepak Ghaisas our chairman has been one of the pioneers of IT revolution in India and has been Vice Chairman, Oracle Financial Services and CEO, iFlex India. Deepak is the first Indian CFO to win the prestigious CFO Asia award.

Shailesh Gadre our Managing Director designs develops and drives Stemade’s businesses strategically. Earlier he was the Managing Director of ORG IMS, India’s largest pharma business intelligence and Market Research Company.

Although it is not expected that Stemade Biotech will stop operations, there are plans in place to transfer the samples safely to another facility which would then take over the maintenance of the samples.

ad2

Stem cell therapy is a planned procedure. Whenever you need your banked stem cells all you will need to do is send a written request addressed to Stemade at least 30 days before the desired date of recovery. Do mention details of your medical doctor or hospital manager, they will be responsible for collecting the cells.

ad3

While banking we simply cryo-preserve collected stem cells. However, we have the facility and license to expand stem cells when needed by our clients.
